This story comes to us from Brooke in Virginia who made the transition to an electric vehicle with her family and they haven’t looked back since.
I grew up around trucks but had never been interested in driving one. My dad has always driven trucks; he has an F-150 because he works in construction. However, I don’t think I sat behind the wheel even once! It just seemed so big and not the kind of car I would drive.
Years later, my husband started wanting a truck. I had little interest until Ford released an electric version, and then the idea grew on me. We have solar panels on the house and battery storage. It seemed like the right time, and a good decision to add an electric vehicle. We had been considering it for a while, and we thought it would work with our lifestyle. Now, we have had the Ford F-150 Lightning for almost a year, and I am entirely in love with it!
My dad, being a traditional truck lover, was surprised that we decided to go electric. But as my parents and friends have had the chance to ride in it with us, they have been amazed at what a great vehicle it is and what it can do. My parents even added a charger to their house!
The car is way more fun to drive than I ever would have imagined. I have never in my life considered myself a car person. I was never worried about what my car looked like, how fast it was, or the features. However, when we got this one, my husband and I fought over who gets to drive it! It is super quiet and has rapid acceleration, making it feel like a spaceship when it takes off. My son and his friends also love riding in it and they talk about it all the time. It makes a great family car because it is spacious and so comfortable.
Before we bought the car, we spoke to many people who own electric vehicles to learn more. Like most people, we wanted to ensure it had enough range for our family’s needs. My parents’ house is about 180 miles away, and we wanted to comfortably get there using our home charger without having to rely on the public EV charging infrastructure.

Like anything new, understanding the range is a learning experience, but it also adds a sense of adventure! When we went up to Hershey Park in Pennsylvania, planning our charging stops became part of the fun. In our everyday life, we never have range concerns. It is so nice to have it plugged in at night and know that it’s going to take you everywhere you need to go for the day.

When we were deciding about getting an EV, we wanted to make sure it was the right investment for our family. They are expensive cars, but taking advantage of the federal tax credit made it much more reasonable. We also considered how much money it would save us. In a typical first year of owning a vehicle, people have to take it in to baby it and care for it. Our truck, on the other hand, just hangs out at home and has nothing to be cared for. No gas, no oil changes, no fluid checks. That’s money as well as time being saved.
It has been almost a year with our EV and we are never looking back. My family and I have loved the truck and we plan on our next car being electric too! Since Ford vehicles can now use the Tesla Supercharger network with adapters, driving electric will be even easier.
