From training to transformation: how workforce development is powering the clean energy future

Across Virginia, partners came together for a recent transportation summit exploring the state’s clean transportation future — from where we stand today to the road ahead. The discussion touched on three key areas: the current transportation landscape, the real-life benefits experienced by EV owners, and one of the most pressing needs in the movement — workforce development. As Virginia continues to electrify its transportation systems, it’s clear that a strong, well-trained workforce is essential to making progress equitable and lasting.

Generation180, alongside Virginia partners, participates in initiatives like Towards Equitable Electric Mobility (TEEM), supporting community engagement, workforce development, and an equitable clean-mobility transformation. We’re excited to share the opportunities available here in Virginia — connecting residents to training, careers, and access in the growing clean-energy economy.

Workforce development is key to building a sustainable and inclusive clean‑energy future. As the sector grows, so does the demand for skilled workers. From solar arrays to electric vehicle infrastructure, the transition to a carbon‑free future depends on programs that equip people with the skills to succeed—and thrive. Inviting organizations like the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and EVHybridNoire to share their opportunities on ourplatform, we’re helping highlight pathways for Virginians to participate in the growing clean‑energy economy.

IBEW Local 26, representing 14,000 electricians across the DC metro area, parts of Virginia, and Maryland, offers apprentice programs like the Electrical Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program. Apprentices gain hands-on experience installing EV chargers, building solar arrays, and supporting data center projects. With 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and 800 hours in training centers, graduates emerge debt-free and ready for promising careers.

EVHybridNoire advances equitable clean‑energy access by opening doors for contractors from historically underrepresented communities. Its E‑Mobility Fellowship Pipeline Program connects fellows with mentorship, real-world experience, and industry networks, preparing them for careers in transportation and mobility.

Generation180’s participation in TEEM highlights our commitment to equitable and clean transportation. Together with partners, we’re building a future where clean energy supports thriving careers, stronger communities, and sustainable growth for all Virginians.

Every apprentice trained, every EV charger installed, and every community engaged tells a story of opportunity and impact. These programs aren’t just pathways—they’re transformations in motion. Investing in people, as much as technology, is reshaping careers, communities, and the energy landscape—one trained professional at a time
