Electric vehicles (EVs) are often associated with new technology and high price tags. But with more than 50 EV models to choose from, the technology is proven, cars are made at an economy of scale, and prices are much more accessible. For many drivers today, the easiest way to go electric isn’t buying new. It’s buying certified pre-owned.
Across the country, more drivers are discovering that pre-owned EVs offer the same benefits as new electric cars at a much lower price point. As an influx of electric vehicles come off lease and enter the pre-owned market, prices are becoming increasingly competitive with gas vehicles even without factoring in the unpredictable gas pump shocks.
In Richmond, Virginia, Recharged, a dealership that sells only pre-owned electric vehicles, is seeing firsthand how this shift is making EV ownership accessible to more people.
A growing supply of pre-owned EVs
Recharged co-founder and CEO John Foley has spent more than 25 years in the automotive industry. The idea for Recharged came in 2023 when he began hearing about a major change happening in the EV market. “At a conference I started hearing people talk about this wave of pre-owned electric vehicles coming back from leases,” Foley said.
Those vehicles are now entering the market in larger numbers, giving buyers more choices across many brands and price tags. “There was going to be a lot of inventory,” Foley said. “But the traditional dealership experience wasn’t really designed to help people understand EVs.” Recharged was created to help fill that gap by offering a dealership experience built entirely around electric vehicles.
EVs are becoming more affordable
One of the biggest advantages of the pre-owned EV market is price.
Today, many pre-owned EVs sell for around $30,000, which is similar to the average price of many pre-owned gas vehicles.
When fuel savings and lower maintenance costs are factored in, EVs can often be even more affordable over time. Foley says demand is strong. “We are busier right now than we were in September 2025 when the federal tax credit ended,” he said. Foley notes that Recharged sold over 100 EVs in the first 15 days of March 2026, indicating that consumer demand remains strong months later.
Rising gas prices are also pushing more drivers to consider electric vehicles. In early 2026, the national average gas prices exceeded $4.00 per gallon. By comparison, the cost of charging an EV at home is much lower. The average price of electricity in the U.S. translates to roughly $1.41 per e-gallon. Not everyone can charge at home, but even for EV owners who rely on public charging, it can still be a convenient and reliable option.
For drivers, those differences add up quickly. Many EV owners save $900 to $1,100 per year on fuel alone, depending on how much they drive, and that’s before considering maintenance. Because EVs have fewer moving parts, maintenance costs are typically 30 to 40 percent lower than gas vehicles over time.

The customers agree
Julie, a recent customer at Recharged, purchased a pre-owned 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 for under $30,000, highlighting how affordable EVs have become in the pre-owned market. For Julie and her family, the decision to switch to an EV was largely financial.
“With college tuition looming on the horizon, gas savings and lower overall cost of ownership were huge factors in my decision to buy an EV now,” she said. “With so many great pre-owned EV options available, it was a no brainer.”
Julie also appreciated the experience at Recharged and the opportunity to learn about different electric vehicles all in one place. “They made it really easy to test drive multiple EVs,” she said. “Since they only sell pre-owned EVs, their staff was incredibly knowledgeable and helped guide us no matter where we were in the process.”
Kevin purchased his used Ford F-150 Lightning at Recharged in January 2026. “New EV trucks are still very expensive, but I was surprised to see that used ones, likely coming off 2-3 year leases, are great deals. I bought my barely three year old truck for almost half the original MSRP,” he shared.
“I was drawn to the F-150 Lightning because of its traditional styling and its similarity to the gas F-150, though the driving experience is much nicer. It’s exceptionally quiet, extremely quick, and has a very comfortable ride. It also has quite a few features that are unique to EV’s such as an enormous frunk, as well as the ability to provide electrical power to tools, appliances, and even a house in an emergency. In addition, the reduced maintenance for EV’s is a huge selling point. It’s amazing how little maintenance they require, which saves not only money, but time.”
Recharged serves far more than just Virginia customers. While about 40% of its sales are local, roughly 60% come from buyers outside the state. The company regularly works with customers across the country, coordinating purchases and shipping vehicles nationwide, reflecting the growing demand for pre-owned EVs across the country. Even beyond Recharged there are many options to buy pre-owned EVs at your local franchised dealerships and national chains like CarMax, which allows you to filter your car search by pre-owned or new electric vehicles.
As more drivers discover the financial and practical benefits of EVs, pre-owned models are becoming an easy and realistic choice for everyday driving. With prices comparable to many gas vehicles, lower fueling and maintenance costs, and a growing network of knowledgeable dealerships and nationwide public charging infrastructure, more Americans can see themselves driving electric. And that is a great choice for all of us, when there is less air pollution and dependence on foreign oil exports.
