On April 23, the General Assembly in Virginia returns for a special session to approve the 2026-2028 biennium budget. This is the chance to put real guardrails on data center expansion so households and small businesses are not stuck footing the bill.

Virginia is home to “Data Center Alley,” the highest concentration of data centers in the world. We can lead in technology and still protect the people who live here, but as data centers continue to expand, lawmakers should make sure that the growth is fair. That means clear accountability.

Data centers should not be allowed to pass unfair energy and infrastructure costs onto consumers. They should pay their fair share, support responsible planning, and meet strong clean energy expectations that help keep energy costs lower while reducing pollution.

This special session is an important moment. The regular General Assembly session ended without a final budget, and disagreement over data center tax policy was one of the biggest reasons. Virginians deserve a budget and an energy policy that puts families, communities, and affordability first.

Tell our legislators to make a fair decision on data center tax exemption legislation and ensure clean energy requirements that protect consumers and the environment.
