Among the many issues vital to our country’s future, clean energy is most definitely “on the ballot” this November. And not just in the presidential election. It matters for federal, state, and local elections too. We need to let candidates know we care about clean energy and plan to elect candidates that do too.
It turns out that Americans across the political spectrum want clean, renewable energy now. Less “dig more coal”, more “create new jobs”—by investing in the biggest economic opportunity of our era. In a time of polarization and pandemic, clean energy continues to poll as a winning issue. But given the perfect storm that’s gripping our country right now—a global pandemic, an historic economic depression, a racial justice reckoning, and the climate crisis—we can’t let America’s urgent need for action on clean energy get sidelined. Bold public investment in clean energy must be an integral part of how our country rebuilds—and moves forward into a better future.
So it’s time to make America’s widespread support for clean energy visible—in our homes, communities, and virtual lives. This campaign is all about equipping you to show your support for a clean energy during what is likely the most important election of our lifetime. Let’s get to it.
Three ways to show your support
Show support online
What does getting involved in the democratic process look like this election season? Showing up online. So show up with a message: download and use our Zoom virtual backgrounds, profile pics, and social media graphics and get after those virtual town halls, meetups, and online conversations.
Engage online using #votecleanenergy2020
Show support in your neighborhood
Put up a yard sign, wear a shirt, or put a sticker on your car. Even with physical interaction limited these days, there are still ways to make your support of clean energy visible in your neighborhood and community. And we all know that more people are walking the dog than ever before…
Show support with art
At the center of the Vote Clean Energy 2020 campaign is an art initiative that will award three (3) artists each with a contract to produce original work that communicates the campaign’s core message: that Americans want bold government action on clean energy— now.
The call for submissions is now closed. Stay tuned for more info on our selected artists!
KEEP MOVING FORWARD
Now that you’re equipped to show your support for clean energy, here are some next steps:
1. CHECK OUT YOUR BALLOT
Find out who is on your ballot for the November election. Then look up their record on investment in clean energy solutions and tackling climate change.
2. DO YOUR READING
Check out your candidate’s website, what is their platform and plans for clean energy investment? Do they understand the tremendous benefits in building a clean energy economy, e.g. the job growth in wind and solar energy and the energy efficiency sectors?
3. SHOW UP
Show up at events, show your support for clean energy, and ask candidates questions, like:
Please give specific examples of how you will help transition our city/county/state or country to a clean energy economy?
The clean energy sector is employing over 3.3 million workers in the United States. How will you make sure our city/county/state/country is investing in these rapidly-growing, job-creating sectors?
The electric car revolution that’s underway will help clean our air and create better, safer, faster car technology. How are you going to help speed it up and make sure our region keeps up with the rest of the state/country/world?
Many communities of color and lower income communities are and will continue to be disproportionately affected by climate impacts. What is your plan to help change this trajectory going forward?
