This story comes to us from Kristin Szakos in Virginia who made the transition to an Electric Vehicle and hasn’t looked back since.

After spending six months in Europe, where they are way ahead on EV adoption, I couldn’t justify buying a gas car when I got home. The stakes for the planet are just too high. So in 2019, I purchased my first electric vehicle, a used Chevy Bolt. 

Like every potential EV owner, I worried about being able to go long distances. But with a little planning, a little extra time, and a couple of phone apps, it is not insurmountable. We drove to Florida and back from Virginia. The EV infrastructure along that route isn’t the best, but we made it work and had a smooth trip.

In my daily life, charging poses no issues. We have a charger at home, and I generally use EVgo or some other app to find chargers on the road. I work at home, live in town, but regularly drive about 30 minutes to transport injured wildlife to a refuge, as well as regularly to meetings about two hours away.

To anyone considering purchasing an EV, do it! Don’t let fear about long-distance keep you from having an environmentally responsible, really fun to drive, great car. I’ve influenced many family and friends to switch to an EV and they love it! The fact that the EV doesn’t have a gas tank or fuel line opens up so much more space in the car, and makes it safer.

Getting an EV isn’t the only way to participate in the clean energy transition. In addition to buying my Bolt, I’ve also installed solar panels, triple pane windows, and energy efficient appliances. Small changes can make a big difference!
