Mark “JJ” Carnes is the Business Manager for Steelton-Highspire School district, an underfunded urban school district in Pennsylvania. His public school district is the first in the state to power all schools with onsite solar energy, a 1,600 kW ground-mounted array funded through a power purchase agreement with McClure Company. JJ helped the district win over $2.5 million in funding from the EPA Clean School Bus Program in 2022 for 7 electric school buses (ESBs). The district aims to pilot vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-building  (V2B) technologies with First Student to enable the electric school bus batteries to provide back-up power when needed.
